What to Know about Summer Study Abroad 2023-2024

Have you ever thought about studying abroad over the summer? Whether it’s Australia or Morocco, Summer Study Abroad is the perfect opportunity to learn about new cultures, eat new foods, and make lots of memories.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Summer Study Abroad programs is how students are going to pay for them. If you are interested in a Summer Study Abroad program at Emory, here are some different ways to cover the cost.

Who is eligible?

  • You must at least 18 years of age
  • You must complete one full year of college courses prior to the summer program
  • You must enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student in the spring prior to travel
  • Maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and in good academic standing

Note: Some summer programs have higher GPA requirements – please refer to the specific program description that you’re interested in for more information regarding their specific academic requirements

How Summer Aid Works

If you are an Emory undergraduate student who qualifies for need-based aid during the regular academic year, you are typically eligible for summer study abroad grants ranging from 45%-85% of tuition. There is no application necessary, and the aid is based on the number of course credits and your current financial aid package.

Note: You must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours to receive summer financial aid

There are both Emory and external scholarships available to help cover the cost of your summer program. You can also find external scholarships online that could be specific to your country, type of program, or have other specific eligibility requirements. These scholarships can be found through a quick google search or through scholarship websites such as Niche. Most of the deadlines are in early January, therefore it is best to start thinking about applying now. If you receive the Employee Courtesy Scholarship, this will be applied toward the billable charges listed on your summer study abroad budget sheet.

If you were awarded the Pell grant, Zell Miller Scholarship, or Hope you may also be eligible to receive summer funding. Additionally, if you are a Pell Grant recipient, you are likely eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship.

Other financing options

There are other available options for financing your trip including, private loans and Parent Plus loans. For more information about these loans, please visit our website. Any remaining federal direct student loans that you did not utilize during the year can be used during the summer.  After you have received your financial aid summer package, you can request these loans by contacting your assigned financial aid advisor.

Note: If you decide to borrow a private loan or a Plus loan for the summer, please allow at least four weeks for processing

You can refer to our financial aid website for further loan details and for our list of private lenders.
